The word raccoon comes from the Powhatan term. It was recorded in one of John Smith’s lists of Native American terms. The original term translated roughly to “one who rubs, scrubs, and scratches with his hands.” Raccoons originated in the deciduous forests, but due to their intelligent nature, and industrious working, they have spread all across North America, and can be found in urban, rural, and suburban areas alike. They have grown so quickly in population that they are now considered a pest in most uninhabitable areas, and continue to thrive as scavengers. They are a medium-large size mammal, and their bone structure shows teeth adapted to eating a variety of items. This unique raccoon skull taxidermy is useful for understanding the bone structure of raccoon heads, and can be used as a decorative piece, or study tool.
